The procurement marks an important step in strengthening the capabilities of Indian Navy ships equipped with the BrahMos weapon system. The contract covers the Fire Control System and Launchers required for Indian Navy ships, supporting the operational employment of the BrahMos system for maritime strike operations.

The project has a minimum indigenous content of 68 per cent, reflecting the emphasis on indigenisation under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category. The Ministry of Defence said the initiative will encourage active participation of various Indian industries, including Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

The involvement of Indian industries and MSMEs is expected to support wider participation in the defence manufacturing ecosystem. The project will also generate employment over a period of three years, according to the Ministry of Defence.

The BrahMos system fitted onboard various frontline warships serves as the Indian Navy’s primary Surface to Surface Missile (SSM) system for maritime strike operations. The system provides the Navy with a capability to engage both land and sea targets from extended ranges.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the weapon system is capable of targeting land and sea targets with pinpoint accuracy while operating at supersonic speed. Its integration with frontline Indian Navy warships forms an important component of the Navy’s maritime strike capability.

The contract with BrahMos Aerospace is also aligned with the ongoing efforts to indigenise advanced military technology. With a minimum indigenous content of 68 per cent, the project seeks to increase the role of domestic industry in the production and integration of advanced defence systems.

The Ministry of Defence stated that the project will bolster India’s maritime security architecture and defence capabilities. The procurement therefore combines operational requirements of the Indian Navy with the broader objective of strengthening indigenous defence production.

The contract signed on October 6 represents another step in the continued procurement and indigenisation of advanced weapon systems for India’s armed forces. The participation of Indian industries and MSMEs, along with the employment generation expected from the project, also underlines its wider industrial significance.

With the BrahMos system already fitted onboard various frontline Indian Navy warships, the procurement of associated Fire Control Systems and Launchers is aimed at supporting the Navy’s maritime strike operations while contributing to India’s efforts to build indigenous capabilities in advanced military technology.
