New Delhi, October 9, 2026: Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Rajesh Sharma of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has been promoted to the rank of Inspector General (IG). A formal pipping ceremony was held at the ITBP Force Headquarters on Friday to mark the occasion.
Shatrujeet Kapur, IPS, Director General of the ITBP, presided over the ceremony and formally adorned the newly promoted officer with his rank insignia. Rajesh Sharma’s spouse also participated in the ceremony, joining the Director General in pinning the new rank insignia on his uniform.
The Director General congratulated IG Rajesh Sharma on his promotion and extended his best wishes for his future responsibilities and continued service to the force.

The pipping ceremony marked an important milestone in the officer’s professional career, recognising his advancement to a senior leadership position within the ITBP. The rank of Inspector General carries significant responsibilities involving operational supervision, administrative leadership and coordination of force activities.

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police is one of India’s Central Armed Police Forces operating under the Ministry of Home Affairs. Primarily responsible for guarding the India-China border, the force operates in some of the country’s most challenging high-altitude environments, including remote Himalayan regions.

Apart from border security, ITBP personnel are also deployed for internal security duties, disaster response, election security and other assignments entrusted to the force.
The promotion of Rajesh Sharma to Inspector General marks a new chapter in his career as he assumes greater leadership responsibilities within the organisation.
