Punjab Police’s Counter Intelligence wing has arrested a woman for allegedly transmitting classified information about military installations to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), while two Army personnel have been booked for their alleged involvement in the suspected espionage operation, police said on Sunday.
The arrested woman, identified as Gurnoor Sidhu, a resident of Faridkot, was apprehended near an under-construction bridge on the Hussainiwala border road. According to police, she is currently being interrogated as investigators seek to establish the extent of the alleged network and the roles played by the accused.
Police said they received information on Thursday that the accused were allegedly conspiring to share classified information concerning military zones and cantonments with Pakistani agencies. Following the information, the matter was taken up for investigation by the Counter Intelligence wing.
According to a police statement, the two Army personnel, who were deployed along the India-China border, allegedly collected sensitive information. Sidhu is accused of facilitating its transmission through electronic devices and internet-based communication, including mobile phones and tablets.
The alleged operation is being investigated as a suspected case of espionage involving the collection and transmission of sensitive military information. Police are examining the circumstances in which the information was allegedly gathered and communicated, as well as the possible extent of the network.
A case has been registered against the three accused at the State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) police station in Fazilka under relevant sections of the Official Secrets Act. Further investigation is underway to determine the nature and scope of the alleged activities.
Security agencies are also examining whether sensitive information relating to the Faridkot military cantonment was transmitted to Pakistan. Investigators are working to establish whether any additional military installations or sensitive locations were involved in the alleged information-sharing activity.
The investigation will seek to establish the extent of the alleged espionage network and determine the individual roles of those named in the case. Police have not disclosed further details about the information allegedly transmitted or the specific evidence collected so far.
The case remains under investigation, and the allegations against the accused have yet to be established through judicial proceedings.
