The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a First Information Report (FIR) against former Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) Assistant Commandant Amit (also referred to as Amit Kumar in some reports) for allegedly establishing a nexus with smugglers to facilitate large-scale cross-border smuggling along the Indo-Nepal border. The case also names unidentified public servants and private individuals.
According to the FIR, the alleged activities took place during Amit’s posting with the 20th Battalion of the SSB in Sitamarhi, Bihar, from March 2023 to January 2026. He is accused of colluding with notorious smugglers from Raxaul and nearby areas to enable large-scale smuggling operations through the Bhangaha Border Outpost (BOP). In exchange, he is alleged to have obtained undue benefits. The open nature of the Indo-Nepal border has long been associated with the movement of items such as gold, drugs, and consumer goods at certain points.
The agency has highlighted several suspicious financial transactions involving multiple bank accounts held by the officer and his family members. These include substantial cash deposits made through cash deposit machines. Investigators are examining whether the officer accumulated illicit wealth, acquired substantial property in his home state of Haryana, and subsequently left government service. The FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), covering aspects such as criminal conspiracy, and under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Following the registration of the case, CBI teams conducted searches at locations associated with Amit in Sonipat, Haryana, including Vikas Nagar Colony. During these searches, investigators seized documents relating to property purchases and bank accounts. The seized records are being scrutinised to trace the sources of funds, assess whether property acquisitions are disproportionate to known sources of income, and establish any links to the alleged smuggling activities during his border posting.
The investigation remains ongoing. The CBI is examining duty records from the 20th Battalion, connections at Bhangaha BOP, the role of other individuals, and the full financial trail. The allegations have not been established in a court of law, and the outcome will depend on the evidence collected.
This development forms part of broader efforts to address corruption and facilitation of smuggling on the Indo-Nepal border, which is primarily guarded by the SSB. The case underscores the importance of vigilance in border management by Central Armed Police Forces personnel.
