Srinagar, October 15, 2026: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Sheikh Jameel Mohammad, a ward officer of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) holding charge of Ward 18 (Safakadal), on Thursday after catching him red-handed while allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹10,000.
According to officials, the CBI laid a trap following a complaint and apprehended the officer while he was allegedly accepting the bribe amount in Srinagar. Some reports identify him as Jameel Ahmad Sheikh; the two spellings refer to the same individual in contemporaneous coverage.
A case under the relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered at the CBI Police Station, Srinagar. Further details regarding the specific nature of the complaint or the official work for which the bribe was allegedly demanded have not been disclosed in the initial reports.
The arrest forms part of ongoing CBI action against alleged corruption in the Srinagar Municipal Corporation. In earlier instances this year, the agency has conducted traps and registered cases involving other SMC personnel in connection with alleged bribe demands related to official clearances and processing of bills.
The investigation is continuing. Citizens who encounter demands for bribes by public servants in Jammu and Kashmir are encouraged to report them to the CBI or the Anti-Corruption Bureau.
