A 21-year-old Agniveer from Pithisar village in Churu district, Rajasthan, died while undergoing treatment at an Army hospital in Brahmapur (Berhampur), Odisha. Mahesh Kumar Muhal had joined the Indian Army as an Agniveer in Artillery Air Defence on 20 June 2026 and was undergoing training at the Army Air Defence Centre in Gopalpur, Odisha.
According to his father, Lalchand, an Army officer informed the family on Thursday that Mahesh’s health had deteriorated and that he had been admitted to the Army hospital in Brahmapur after losing consciousness with a fever. Medical tests did not confirm dengue, although the symptoms were reported to resemble those of the disease. Lalchand was travelling towards Odisha—having begun his journey by train towards Delhi to catch a flight—when he received news of his son’s death around 1:30 a.m. while en route.
Mahesh had completed his BA and was selected for the Army shortly thereafter. He is survived by his father and a younger brother, Nirmal, who is a first-year BA student at Lohia College in Churu. Family members stated that Mahesh had spoken to them the previous Monday and expressed his readiness to take responsibility for the household.
Army officials informed the family that the mortal remains reached Delhi on Saturday and were expected to arrive in Pithisar village on Sunday. News of the death prompted mourning in the village, with residents gathering at the family’s home to offer condolences. Local representatives also paid tributes.
The Army Air Defence Centre at Gopalpur is one of the key training establishments for Agniveers inducted under the Agnipath scheme into the Army Air Defence arm. No official statement from the Indian Army on the circumstances of the death was immediately available in public reports; details are based on accounts provided by the family to local media.
The incident has drawn expressions of grief from the local community in Churu, where Mahesh was described as a young man who had recently fulfilled his aspiration to serve in the Army.
