Vellore, Tamil Nadu (October 25, 2026): A 52-year-old retired Indian Army officer, identified as Babu, has been arrested for allegedly sharing confidential military information and details about Army equipment with an unidentified woman via WhatsApp. The case was registered by the Vellore Rural Police following his handover by central intelligence agencies.
Babu, a native of Keezhvallam village near Kaniyambadi in Vellore district, served in the Indian Army for 28 years across various divisions. He retired last year (2025) with the rank of Captain from the Army’s equipment division and subsequently settled in his native village.
According to preliminary investigations cited by Kaniyambadi police and reports based on ANI inputs, an unidentified woman contacted Babu on WhatsApp approximately a year ago. She is alleged to have initiated contact through inappropriate conversations before gradually seeking information related to the Indian Army and its equipment. Babu is suspected of sharing the requested details over the past year. When he did not possess certain information, he reportedly telephoned Army offices to obtain it and then forwarded the details to the woman.
Army officials grew suspicious of his activities and questioned him in person with assistance from central intelligence agencies. The inquiry reportedly indicated that he had been communicating various military-related details to the woman over the preceding year.
Central intelligence officials detained Babu for questioning on October 23, 2026, and handed him over to the Vellore Rural Police Station on the night of October 24. The Vellore Rural Police have registered a case and are conducting further investigations.
Investigators are working to identify the woman who contacted Babu, determine who operated the WhatsApp account, and examine whether any foreign nationals or overseas organisations were involved in the suspected information leak. The possibility of a honeytrap operation is also under examination, though it has not been confirmed. The investigation remains ongoing.
This case highlights ongoing concerns regarding the safeguarding of sensitive military information, even after an officer’s retirement. No specific details of the alleged leaked information have been publicly disclosed at this stage, and the allegations remain under investigation.
