In this post we are talking about the basic structure of the Indian army, also, what is the field formation and structure with which Indian army works duringย war and peace. This information is helpful for the army lovers and aspirants. The armed force has a quality of around a million troops and fields 34 Divisions inside 13 Corps. Its home office is spotted in the Indian capital New Delhi and it is under the general charge of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), right now General Dalbir Singh Suhag. Basic Structure of The Indian Army

Commands

The army works 6 operational commands and 1 training command. Every command is going by General Officer Commanding-in-Chief with the rank of Lieutenant General. Every command is specifically associated to the Army HQ in New Delhi. There is additionally the Army Training Commanded shortened as ARTRAC. The staff in every Command HQ is going by Chief of Staff (COS) who is likewise an officer of Lieutenant General rank. Other than these, army officers may head tri-administration commands, for example, the Strategic Forces Command, Integrated Defense Staff (IDS) and the Andaman and Nicobar Command.

Corps

Each Corps is commanded by a GOC(Corps Commander) in the rank of Lieutenant General.ย It is composed of 3-4 Divisions.

Division

Each Division is headed by GOC(Division Commander) in the rank of Major General.ย It usually consists of 3 to 4 Brigades.ย Currently, the Indian Army has 37ย Divisions including; 4 RAPIDโ€™s (Re-organised Army Plains Infantry Division), 18 Infantry Divisions, 10 Mountain Divisions, 3 Armoured Divisions and 2 Artillery Divisions.

Brigade

A Brigade for the most part comprises of around 3,000 battle troops with supporting components. An Infantry Brigade more often than not has 3 Infantry Battalions alongside different Support Elements. It is directed by a detachment authority who is a Brigadier, equal to a Brigadier General in a few armed forces. Notwithstanding the Brigades in different Army Divisions, the Indian Army additionally has 5 Independent Armored Brigades, 15 Independent Artillery Brigades, 7 Independent Infantry Brigades, 1 Independent Parachute Brigade,3 Independent Air Defense Brigades, 2 Independent Air Defense Groups and 4 Independent Engineer Brigades. These Independent Brigades work specifically under the Corps Commander (GOC Corps).

Battalion

Composed of four rifle companies.ย Commanded by a battalion commander who is a Colonelย and is the Infantryโ€™s main fighting unit. Every infantry battalion also possesses one Ghatak Platoon.

Company

Composed of three platoons.ย Commanded by a Company Commander who is a Major or Lieutenant-Colonel.

Platoon

Composed of three sections. Commanded by a Platoon Commander who is a JCO.

Section

Smallest military outfit with a strength of 10 personnel. Commanded by a Section Commander of the rank of Havaldar.
