76th or 77th Independence Day: On August 15, 1947, India broke free from the shackles of British colonialism that spanned over 200 years. This day marks Indiaโs maiden voyage into sovereignty, leaving behind the oppressive British rule to emerge as a democratic nation.
Every year on this day, the Tricolour graces homes, establishments, and public spaces, while the strains of the national anthem reverberate throughout the country.
However, as the country gets draped in the hues of celebration, a question lingers: Is 2023 the 76th or 77th year of Indiaโs Independence?
Independence Day 2023: 76th or 77th?
India achieved freedom on August 15, 1947. As stated by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), 2023 will mark the 77th Independence Day. But if youโre counting anniversaries, itโs the 76th, as the first anniversary was observed in 1948.
Therefore, in 2023, India will commemorate its 77th Independence Day while celebrating the 76th anniversary of its independence.
Under the banner โAzadi Ka Amrit Mahotsavโ, the theme for this yearโs Independence Day is โNation First, Always Firstโ. Numerous events leading up to August 15 have been organized, enriching the celebratory ambiance.
Jagdeep Dhankhar, the Vice-President of India, on August 11, initiated the โHar Ghar Tirangaโ campaign, embarking on a bike rally accompanied by MPs from Pragati Maidan.
Come August 15, the nationโs eyes will turn to the Red Fort as Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivers his address to the citizens, followed by the ceremonial unfurling of the National Flag. This grand event, as highlighted in the PIB press release, will witness the presence of approximately 1,800 individuals, from varied professions, accompanied by their spouses, from different corners of India.
