Hyderabad: The Indian Air Force’s esteemed Navigation Training School (NTS), located at Air Force Station Begumpet, celebrated its platinum jubilee in a grand ceremony recently. Known affectionately as ‘TERNS,’ the NTS holds the prestigious title of being one of the oldest training establishments within the Indian Air Force (IAF), having nurtured generations of navigators since its inception.
The celebration, marked by the attendance of numerous Air Force personnel and veterans who have been part of the NTS’s rich history, took place on March 1. This notable event was graced by the presence of Air Marshal R Radhish, Air Officer Commanding in Chief, Training Command, IAF, who released a special cover commemorating the occasion.
The jubilee was further highlighted by a series of commemorative events, including an exhilarating aerial display performed by the Akashganga Sky Diving Team and a precision drill display by the Air Warrior Drill Team, showcasing the skills and discipline instilled at the NTS.
The NTS, originally established in September 1946 at the Royal Indian Air Force Station (RIAF) in Tambaram, Chennai, began its journey as the Air Navigation School. This initiative was aimed at addressing the critical need for trained navigators in the post-World War II era, making it the alma mater for IAF navigators.
Following India’s independence, the school underwent a relocation to No. 2 Air Force Academy in Jodhpur, where it evolved into the ‘Air Navigation Squadron.’ The commencement of the first Navigators Course in 1949 marked a significant milestone in the IAF’s training capabilities.
In a strategic move to enhance its training curriculum, the school incorporated the Signallers’ Training element in 1963, subsequently being renamed the “Navigation and Signals School.” This amalgamation underscored the institution’s commitment to providing comprehensive training that encompasses both navigation and communication disciplines.
The school’s relocation to Air Force Station Begumpet, Secunderabad, in 1967, where it currently stands, has further solidified its status as a cornerstone in the IAF’s training framework.
The platinum jubilee of the NTS not only celebrates its illustrious 75-year history but also reaffirms the Indian Air Force’s dedication to excellence in training and operational readiness. Through decades of evolution and adaptation, the NTS continues to play a pivotal role in preparing aircrew for the complexities of modern air operations, ensuring that the legacy of precision and dedication endures for generations to come.
