Defence Ministry Approves Major Projects Worth Over Rs 21,000 Crores for Army and Navy

In a significant move for strengthening India’s maritime capabilities, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has approved five major capital acquisition projects amounting to over Rs. 21,772 crores. This decision was taken under the chairmanship of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

Among the notable approvals is the procurement of 31 New Water Jet Fast Attack Crafts (NWJFACs) intended for the Indian Navy. These advanced crafts are designed for a variety of roles, including Low-Intensity Maritime Operations, surveillance, patrol duties, and Search and Rescue (SAR) operations near the coastline. Their operational versatility positions them well for anti-piracy missions, particularly in the strategic waters surrounding India’s island territories.

Moreover, the DAC has sanctioned the acquisition of 120 Fast Interceptor Craft (FIC-1). These vessels are engineered to undertake multiple operational roles, including escorting high-value naval units such as aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates, and submarines. This enhancement in coastal defence capabilities underscores the government’s commitment to bolstering the maritime security infrastructure of the country.

The approvals represent a major boost for both the Army and Navy as they endeavor to enhance their operational readiness and response capabilities in the ever-evolving maritime security environment. The decision reflects the government’s proactive approach toward modernizing and expanding India’s naval forces, ensuring they are well-equipped to handle a range of maritime challenges.
