In a critical rescue operation unfolding in Umrangso, Assam, the Indian Army and Assam Rifles have mobilized their Engineers Task Force, comprising divers, sappers, and medical teams, to assist in the rescue of miners trapped in a flooded coal mine. The incident took place in the Dima Hasao district, near the Assam-Meghalaya border, where nine coal miners found themselves trapped due to a sudden influx of water into the mine.

The rescue operation, which began on January 6, 2025, is being conducted in close coordination with the local civil administration, with efforts intensifying to save the miners. The situation became dire when water levels inside the mine rose to nearly 100 feet, complicating the rescue efforts. In response, the Indian Navy has also been called upon, with deep divers being flown in from Visakhapatnam to aid in the operation.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been actively overseeing the operation, expressing gratitude for the quick response and deployment of resources. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are also on site, enhancing the multi-agency effort to ensure a swift and safe rescue.

Visuals from the scene show military personnel and rescue teams equipped with diving gear and other necessary equipment, working tirelessly to navigate the challenging conditions. The operation is further complicated by the mine’s remote location and the lack of infrastructure, but the commitment of the Army and local authorities remains unwavering in their mission to rescue those affected.
