Wing Commander Vernon Keane Awarded Shaurya Chakra for Averting Mid-Air Disaster

Indian Air Force pilot’s skillful handling of critical aircraft malfunction praised at Gallantry Awards 2025.

Wing Commander Vernon Desmond Keane of the Indian Air Force was conferred the Shaurya Chakra by President Droupadi Murmu during the Gallantry Awards 2025 ceremony held in New Delhi. The award recognizes his extraordinary bravery and expert piloting, which averted a potential mid-air catastrophe in July 2023.

On July 24, 2023, while piloting a Jaguar fighter aircraft, Wing Commander Keane faced a critical mid-air malfunction. Confronted with the option to eject and abandon the aircraft, Keane instead displayed exceptional calm and technical acumen. He safely maneuvered the malfunctioning jet away from populated areas, released the empty fuel tanks to reduce risk, and carried out a controlled landing. His decision not only saved a valuable national asset but also protected countless lives and property on the ground.

The Shaurya Chakra is India’s third-highest peacetime gallantry award, given for acts of conspicuous courage or self-sacrifice outside the battlefield. First established in 1952 as the Ashoka Chakra, Class III, and renamed in 1967, the award honors both military personnel and civilians. Wing Commander Keane’s actions add to the distinguished legacy of the medal, representing courage under pressure and unwavering commitment to duty.

During the ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Murmu presented the medal to Keane in the presence of senior military officials, dignitaries, and fellow honorees. The official citation highlighted Keane’s “superlative flying skills and exceptional situational awareness” in saving the aircraft and averting a disaster.

Keane’s journey to the cockpit began in Hyderabad, where he grew up inspired by stories of aviation and safety shared by his father’s friends from the Air Force. His fascination with flying led him to pursue a career as a fighter pilot, eventually earning his place in the Indian Air Force. The Jaguar aircraft involved in the July 2023 incident was later repaired and returned to service—flown once again by Keane after passing all technical inspections.

The Gallantry Awards 2025 ceremony served as a powerful reminder of the dedication and courage of India’s armed forces. Wing Commander Keane’s actions stand out as a remarkable example of professional excellence and selfless service, inspiring both his peers and the nation.
