In a significant step to bolster both civilian connectivity and strategic preparedness, the Indian Air Force (IAF) will take over the operation of Chinyalisaur airstrip in Uttarkashi and Gauchar airstrip in Chamoli districts of Uttarakhand. Meanwhile, the Pithoragarh airport will be managed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), with a major ₹450 crore expansion project already sanctioned.

The state government, emphasizing the need to improve air connectivity in border districts, has given in-principle approval for the operational shift. Officials said the move aims to serve dual purposes — facilitating local travel and meeting strategic military requirements.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will soon be signed between the Uttarakhand government and the AAI for the management of the Pithoragarh airport. In addition, the government is planning to develop a one-kilometer-long airstrip at Gunji near the Adi Kailash region, with technical assistance from the Air Force.

Government Push for Air Connectivity

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami underlined the importance of the initiative, stating:

“The expansion of the air network in the border state is very important. This will make it possible to meet the strategic needs along with serving the local residents.”

New Heli Services Under UDAN

Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, in a letter to the Chief Minister, confirmed that heli services between Pithoragarh and Munsyari under the UDAN regional connectivity scheme are expected to begin by September 30. The service will be operated by Heritage Aviation.

Preparations are also underway to launch Pithoragarh-Dharchula heli services, with land acquisition for a helipad in Dharchula in progress. Heritage Aviation has received initial approval to operate the route.

With these measures, Uttarakhand is set to strengthen both its civilian air travel infrastructure and strategic defence preparedness, enhancing accessibility to remote Himalayan regions and improving rapid deployment capabilities along the border.
