In a solemn and proud moment for Manipur, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla felicitated Squadron Leader Rizwan Malik, the first individual from the state to be awarded the prestigious Vir Chakra, for his exemplary bravery during Operation Sindoor.
The ceremony, held at Raj Bhavan on September 1recognized his heroic role in a decisive aerial strike against Pakistani terror targets, an operation that has been described as a turning point in Indiaโs counter-terror strategy.
Operation Sindoor, hailed as one of Indiaโs most successful cross-border military actions, witnessed the awarding of nine Vir Chakrasโthe highest number for a single operation since the Balakot airstrikes of 2019. Squadron Leader Malikโs contribution was crucial to the missionโs success, earning him widespread national acclaim. The Manipur government further honored his achievement with a cash award of โน10 lakh.
Governor Bhalla, a 1984-batch IAS officer and former Union Home Secretary who has dealt with sensitive national security issues including the Manipur insurgency, praised Malikโs courage and sacrifice. โYour act of valor has not only brought glory to Manipur but has also inspired countless young Indians,โ he remarked.
In his address, Squadron Leader Malik humbly thanked the state and his family for their unwavering support, dedicating the recognition to his fellow servicemen.
The event concluded with a formal exchange of honors, including a memento and floral tribute. Senior officials, Malikโs family, and distinguished guests attended the ceremony, which underscored the strong bond between the state and the armed forces.
