“From Spiti, for Spiti.” In a significant outreach initiative aimed at empowering border communities, Lt Gen Anindya Sengupta, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Surya Command, inaugurated a new Community Radio Station ‘Voice of Spiti’ at Giu/Gue in Himachal Pradesh on 02 October 2025. This marks the second community radio station established by the Indian Army in the border areas of the state, further strengthening its commitment to the socio-cultural development of the region.
During the event, the Army Commander, accompanied by Mrs. Ruchira Sengupta, Regional President of the Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA), interacted with local residents and reaffirmed the Indian Army’s unwavering support for the development, empowerment, and welfare of the local population in remote high-altitude areas.
A unique initiative by the Indian Army, ‘Voice of Spiti’ is envisioned as a grassroots communication platform for the people of the region. It will broadcast local news, cultural programs, educational content, healthcare awareness, and vital public information, thereby becoming a crucial medium for connecting isolated communities, preserving local heritage, and promoting participatory development.
The establishment of the station underscores the Army’s continuous efforts to enhance civil-military cooperation, boost information access in remote border villages, and strengthen the emotional bond between the armed forces and the people of Spiti Valley. Through such initiatives, the Indian Army continues to stand shoulder to shoulder with citizens, ensuring that even the most far-flung border regions remain connected, informed, and empowered.
