India is placed on 4th in world’s military strength ranking 2017 by Global Firepower. It has published the list of 133 countries ranked based on their military strength. The ranking has considered around 50 factors to determine the military strength of these countries. More details on Military Strength Ranking 2017 are below.
The finalized Global Firepower ranking relies on over 50 factors to determine a given nation’s PowerIndex (‘PwrIndx’) score. Our formula allows smaller, though more technologically-advanced, nations to compete with larger, lesser-developed ones. Modifiers (in the form of bonuses and penalties) are added to further refine the list. Some items to observe in regards to the finalized ranking:
+ Ranking does not simply rely on the total number of weapons available to any one country but rather focuses on weapon diversity within the number totals to provide a better balance of firepower available (i.e. fielding 100 minesweepers does not equal the strategic and tactical value of fielding 10 aircraft carriers).
+ Nuclear stockpiles are NOT taken into account but recognized/suspected nuclear powers receive a bonus.
+ Geographical factors, logistical flexibility, natural resources and local industry influence the final ranking.
+ Available manpower is a key consideration; nations with large populations tend to rank higher.
+ Land-locked nations are NOT penalized for lack of a navy; naval powers ARE penalized for lack of diversity in available assets.
+ NATO allies receive a slight bonus due to the theoretical sharing of resources.
+ Current political / military leadership is NOT taken into account.

Indian Air Force airmen exam for group X and Y is postponed for now as per the official website of the Indian Air Force for airmen selection airmenselection.cdac.in. The exam is also known as STAR scheduled test for airmen recruitment which is an online exam for the airmen selection and it was getting conducted for the first time. As per the official website, a new exam date will be issued soon to the candidates. We have seen the similar issues during AFCAT online exam which is also conducted by CDAC, many candidates who took AFCAT online exam on 25th Feb 2018, faced a lot of technical glitches like automatic session timeout, laggy server, loss of time and not able to submit the exam after completion, many candidates were also not able to take the AFCAT online exam due to technical issues and will be issued fresh date and admit card.
Official Statement on STAR
Dear Candidates,
The scheduled test for airmen recruitment (STAR) is postponed and will not be held on 10th and 11th March 2018 due to technical reasons. Fresh dates of exam will be announced shortly. We understand the inconvenience caused to you because of the change of date. Fresh date for issue of admit card would also be announced soon.
This new Airforce online exam system was announced last year and still, CDAC was not able to manage the exam properly. Earlier AFCAT and now STAR exam date for Airmen is postponed.
Before CDAC, Indian Air Force has conducted the similar exams offline successfully every year. If CDAC is incompetent to provide a better online exam management, it should better refund the money to the students and the contract must pass to someone else with better facilities and technology.
CDAC online registration was so poor that it charged many candidates multiple times and on top of that, they were not registered successfully even after paying multiple payments.
Official Statement on refund:
Candidates who have paid fees multiple times, refund shall be processed after reconciliation with bank after 30th March 2018.

India will host navies from at least 16 countries for the mega naval exercise “MILAN 2018” under the Andaman and Nicobar Command. The exercise is taking place in the backdrop of China’s growing military posturing in the IOR. The exercise, themed “Friendship Across the Seas”, will be held from March 6 to March 13, 2018.
Exercise Milan is conducted biennially by Indian Navy under the Andaman and Nicobar Command with friendly foreign navies. It was first held in 1995 where 4 navies had participated in it apart from India – Indonesia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
Milan was first held in 1995. Since then, the event has been held biannually except for 2001, 2005, and 2016. The 2001 and 2016 editions were not held because of the International Fleet Review, while the 2005 event was postponed to 2006 due to the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami.
Today, Exercise Milan is a huge international event where navies from Bay of Bengal, South East Asia and Indian Ocean Region participates. It provides effective forum to participating navies to come together to discuss common concerns in the Indian Ocean Region and forge deeper cooperation among friendly navies.
Diverse professional exercises, seminars, social events and sporting fixtures will be organized in Milan 2018. Views and ideas on maritime good-order and enhancing regional cooperation for combating unlawful activities at sea will be shared between the countries.
Maldives was invited to join the Milan exercise but they have declined. They have not given any reason for the decision. It may have taken the decision possibly due to the current situation there. Also the participation of Maldives Naval Officers would have been as observers only.
Ties between India and Maldives weakened a bit after Maldives declared emergency. On February 21, India had reacted strongly over the extension of emergency by a month.
Maldives and India enjoy a long history of excellent defence and military cooperation and it is a tradition that we are confident that will endure and continue indefinitely.
The interactions during Milan encompass sharing of views and ideas on maritime good order and enhancing regional cooperation for combating unlawful activities at sea
China’s growing military posturing in the Indo-Pacific region will be addressed during the meet. India, the US and several other nations have been pressing for freedom of navigation in the disputed South China Sea. Also, In November, India, the US, Australia and Japan gave shape to the long-pending quadrilateral coalition to develop a new strategy to keep the critical sea routes in the Indo-Pacific free of Chinese influence
The naval exercise will also provide benefits for participant countries as well. For smaller countries in particular which lack capacity, like Myanmar and Vietnam, they’ll get the opportunity to interact with a number of significant strategic countries.
The India Navy had also announced that the Indian Army’s amphibious forces, which are specialist units used to assault and capture island targets, were also participating in the exercise.
‘Milan’ was first held in 1995 with the participation of just five navies. The aim of the initiative was to have an effective forum to discuss common concerns in the Indian Ocean Region and forge deeper cooperation among friendly navies. The exercise is being hosted by the Indian Navy under the aegis of the Andaman and Nicobar Command.
