Codenamed “Sea Defenders-2024,” the exercise is poised to enhance maritime security and readiness in the Indo-Pacific region through simulated scenarios addressing piracy, asymmetric threats, and emergency response.

Scheduled to take place on March 9th and 10th off the coast of Port Blair, the joint exercise will encompass a range of simulated operations, including drone attacks on commercial merchant traffic, maritime search and rescue missions, firefighting, marine pollution response, and counter-drug interdiction exercises.

A simulated medical evacuation will also be conducted to bolster preparedness in emergency situations.

The USCGC Bertholf, a Legend-class United States Coast Guard Cutter, brings advanced technology and weaponry to the exercise, boasting a helicopter landing pad, state-of-the-art sensors, and communication equipment.

With its operational versatility in law enforcement, defence, and national security missions, the Bertholf exemplifies the USCG’s commitment to maritime safety and security.

The ship’s journey spanning over 16,000 nautical miles from Alameda, California, to India underscores the shared commitment between the two nations in upholding maritime norms and promoting a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific region.

The joint exercise underscores the paramount importance of international cooperation in tackling maritime challenges. It reaffirms the enduring partnership between the Indian Coast Guard and the United States Coast Guard, which forms a critical component of the strategic relationship between the two countries.

Notably, both agencies have a history of extensive interactions, particularly in training, exercises, and cooperative measures.

Previous interactions, such as the visit of the USCG Ship Midgett to Chennai on September 22, 2022, have laid the groundwork for deeper collaboration between the Indian and United States Coast Guards.

Such high-level engagements serve to maintain a professional relationship and foster mutual understanding in the maritime domain.

As the “Sea Defenders-2024” exercise unfolds, it symbolizes not only the strength of the partnership between the Indian Coast Guard and the United States Coast Guard but also their shared commitment to safeguarding maritime interests and ensuring security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
