Ajit Doval Appointed National Security Advisor for a Historic Third Term

In parallel to Doval's re-appointment, the Cabinet also confirmed PK Mishra as the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister.

In a significant political development, Ajit Doval has been re-appointed as the National Security Advisor (NSA) in the Modi 3.0 government, marking an unprecedented third term for him in this high-profile position. As of June 10, following the conclusion of his second term on June 5—a day after the Lok Sabha election results—Doval’s tenure now extends to an impressive 10 years, the longest for any NSA in India’s history.

A Career of Distinction

Ajit Doval, a 1968-batch IPS officer from the Kerala cadre, has been instrumental in spearheading major security and intelligence operations in India. His re-appointment underscores the government’s trust in his abilities and emphasizes the importance of continuity in managing the nation’s security strategies, especially in relations with neighboring countries like China.

Accomplishments and Contributions

Among his notable achievements, Doval is the first police officer to receive the Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award. His experience includes a significant stint in the Indian High Commission in Pakistan, where he sharpened his diplomatic skills. Notably, Doval played a critical role in negotiating the release of passengers from the hijacked Air India flight IC-814 in Kandahar in 1999. His leadership was also pivotal in Operation Black Thunder in 1988 to counter Khalistani terrorists.

During his tenure as the Director of the Intelligence Bureau from 2004 to 2005, Doval made marked achievements in intelligence gathering and analysis. He is credited with formulating the ‘offensive defense strategy,’ which led to critical missions like the surgical strikes in 2016 and the Balakot airstrike in 2019. Furthermore, his efforts facilitated the safe return of 546 Indian nurses from Iraq and the successful military operation against National Socialist Council of Nagaland separatists in Myanmar.

Elevated Responsibilities

Reflecting his elevated status, Doval was assigned the rank of cabinet minister in his second term, signifying the critical nature of his role in national security. His continued appointment as NSA by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a testament to his indispensable role in shaping India’s security policies and ensuring the nation’s safety.
