In a significant move to bolster maritime security in the Indian Ocean region, India has gifted two waterjet propelled Fast Interceptor Crafts (FIC) to Mozambique. The ceremony for this important transfer took place in Nacala, Mozambique, where the vessels were officially presented by key Indian military officials, including India’s High Commissioner to Mozambique, Robert Shetkintong, Defence Adviser Colonel Puneet Attri, and Commander Rajan Chib of INS Gharial. The event was also attended by Permanent Secretary Augusto Casimiro Mueio of Mozambique’s Ministry of National Defence, who accepted the crafts on behalf of the government.
These advanced FICs are capable of reaching speeds of up to 45 knots and are equipped with machine guns and bullet-resistant cabins, significantly enhancing Mozambique’s ability to tackle maritime threats, particularly those posed by terrorism and insurgency in the Cabo Delgado region. The donation reflects India’s continuing commitment to enhancing regional maritime security.
This is not the first time India has extended such assistance to Mozambique; the country previously donated two larger interceptor vessels in 2019 and two similar FICs in January 2022. These initiatives showcase India’s role as a trusted partner in the Indian Ocean region, where the Indian Navy has been engaged in collaborative efforts with other regional navies to combat a variety of maritime challenges, including piracy, human and drug trafficking, illegal fishing, and maritime terrorism.
Furthermore, India’s long-standing support for Mozambique has encompassed humanitarian assistance, notably demonstrated by the Indian Navy’s rapid response during Cyclone Idai in 2019 and the provision of over one million COVID-19 vaccine doses in 2021. In addition, India has facilitated training programs for Mozambique’s armed forces and has provided vital infrastructure, including an Infantry Weapons Training Simulator.
The ongoing engagement is also evident through the resident Indian Coast Guard team, which offers training on the operation and maintenance of the vessels gifted by India. Regular port calls by Indian warships, coupled with participation in joint surveillance initiatives and exercises, further emphasize India’s commitment to supporting Mozambique and enhancing maritime security in the region.
