Kyiv Targeted by Intense Russian Drone Assault

Kyiv Faces Heavy Drone Assault as Ukrainian Forces Sustain Pressure on Russia

Kyiv, Ukraine — In a disturbing surge of hostilities, Ukraine reported on Saturday that its capital, Kyiv, endured a significant drone attack overnight, resulting in damage and casualties across various districts. President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the ongoing assault, emphasizing that the “constant terrorist attacks on Ukrainian cities prove that the pressure on Russia and its accomplices is insufficient.”

As explosions echoed throughout Kyiv on Saturday afternoon amid active air raid alerts, the air force confirmed it successfully intercepted 39 out of 71 drones launched from Russian territory. The drone strikes not only focused on the capital but also targeted the Sumy border region, as well as central areas like Kirovograd and Poltava. Despite the defensive efforts, debris from downed drones wreaked havoc in four regions, with reports of damage to buildings and vehicles in Kyiv and the Odesa region.

Local officials reported injuries, including that of a policeman and an 82-year-old woman in the Kyiv region, who sustained head wounds from shrapnel. The situation was dire in a village near Kherson, where a 40-year-old woman was tragically found dead amidst the rubble following artillery strikes from Russian forces. Additionally, a hospital in Kherson was damaged, although staff and patients were unharmed as they had taken refuge.

Military Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrsky warned that Ukrainian forces were enduring one of the most formidable Russian offensives since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. The attacks this weekend reflect a grim escalation in hostilities as Ukraine continues to grapple with the persistent threat posed by Russian military actions.

As the situation develops, the Ukrainian government calls for increased international pressure on Russia to curb the ongoing violence and protect its civilian population.
