The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is set to enhance its maritime capabilities significantly with the acquisition of 40 fast patrol craft, valued at 25.8 billion pesos ($439 million). This major procurement is funded through official development assistance from France and aims to bolster the PCG’s ability to conduct maritime law enforcement, conduct search and rescue operations, protect the environment, and respond to disasters.

In addition to the new vessels, the agreement includes Integrated Logistics Support and various support equipment tailored for PCG bases. Notably, half of the patrol craft will be built domestically, reinforcing the Philippines’ commitment to local industry and economic growth.

Secretary Arsenio M. Balisacan of the National Economic and Development Authority expressed that this project aligns with the government’s objectives to enhance maritime security by upgrading the capabilities of key institutions such as the PCG. He emphasized that the new fast patrol craft would play a crucial role in deterring smuggling and illegal activities while ensuring effective enforcement of maritime sovereignty in critical marine areas.

PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gavan referred to the acquisition as “the largest, so far, single-purchase in the modernization of the Philippine Coast Guard,” calling it a “game-changer.” He noted that the new boats would enable the Coast Guard to deploy at least two patrol vessels in each district, enhancing the agency’s ability to safeguard the Philippines’ extensive maritime territory.

These developments come in light of ongoing challenges faced by the PCG, including a strained inventory of vessels and equipment needed to protect the archipelagic nation’s maritime interests. The situation has been exacerbated by clashes with Chinese vessels in disputed areas of the South China Sea, leading to calls for urgent upgrades in coastal defense capabilities.

In recent months, Manila has actively pursued strategic defense partnerships and vessel procurements to strengthen its maritime forces, including a $413 million deal for five patrol vessels from Japan earlier in May and the recent addition of two fast attack interdiction craft for the Philippine Navy in September.

With this significant acquisition and collaboration with international partners, the Philippine Coast Guard is poised to play a crucial role in safeguarding national waters and ensuring maritime safety in an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape.
