FNSS Unveils ‘Kaplan’ Armored Personnel Carrier in Collaboration with Indonesia’s Pindad
ISTANBUL – In a significant development in defense manufacturing, local armored-vehicle manufacturer FNSS has introduced the conceptual design for a new armored personnel carrier named "Kaplan" in collaboration with Indonesian firm Pindad. The unveiling took place at the Saha Expo arms fair in Istanbul in late October, highlighting a continuing partnership between the two firms that has previously produced mid-size tanks for the Indonesian military.
The Kaplan is designed to be a state-of-the-art troop transporter capable of operating in all-terrain and all-weather conditions. Manufacturing is set to kick off in 2025, with the initial unit expected to be produced at FNSS’s Turkish facilities, followed by the second unit at PT Pindad’s facilities in Indonesia. The first deliveries are anticipated by the end of 2026, aligning with the specific requirements of the Indonesian Army.
During the unveiling, FNSS CEO Nail Kurt emphasized the vehicle’s advanced features, which include a sophisticated suspension system aimed at minimizing internal vibrations and enhancing traction. The Kaplan can accommodate up to 13 occupants, including a crew of three: a driver, a gunner, and a commander. Notably, the vehicle is anticipated to be one of the fastest in its class, achieving speeds exceeding 70 kilometers per hour.
Safety and survivability are key aspects of the Kaplan’s design. It will be equipped with an automatic fire suppression system, a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) defense system, and climate control measures to maintain a secure and comfortable internal environment.
The vehicle’s modular design will allow for the integration of various weapon systems, including manned or unmanned turret options capable of sporting 30 mm and 35 mm cannons, as well as 120 mm mortars and anti-tank guided missiles. Both FNSS and PT Pindad will carry out qualification tests in their respective countries to ensure the highest performance and quality standards.
As Indonesia continues to modernize its military capabilities, the collaboration between FNSS and Pindad marks a significant stride toward enhancing the operational readiness of the Indonesian Army.
