India to Sign Multi-Billion Dollar Defence Deals for Scorpene Submarines and Rafale Jets for INS Vikrant, Says Navy Chief

In a significant advancement for India’s maritime capabilities, the Indian Navy is poised to finalize two multi-billion dollar defense agreements focusing on the acquisition of Scorpene submarines and Rafale fighter jets specifically for the aircraft carrier INS Vikrant. This announcement was made by Navy chief Admiral Dinesh Tripathi, indicating that the formal agreements are expected to be signed early next year.

The decision to pursue these acquisitions was reportedly solidified during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Paris earlier this year. With negotiations now in the final stages, the agreements are anticipated to receive approval from the Cabinet Committee on Security soon.

In addition to the purchases, Admiral Tripathi highlighted ongoing efforts to boost indigenous capabilities, stating plans to construct six nuclear-powered submarines domestically. Of these, two have already been approved by the government. Currently, the Navy operates two other distinct categories of nuclear-powered submarines, including the INS Arihant, which has successfully conducted patrols, and the newly commissioned INS Arighaat.

Moreover, the Chief of Naval Staff spoke about discussions regarding a second indigenous aircraft carrier, noting that the first, INS Vikrant, is now operational. He emphasized the Navy’s growth trajectory, revealing plans to launch a new warship monthly throughout the coming year. Presently, over 30 ships and submarines are in the construction phase, with an additional 60 being prepared for future development. There are also two vessels under construction in Russia, contributing to a substantial increase in India’s naval fleet over the next decade, with the prospect of nearly 100 new ships and submarines.

Responding to inquiries about recent missile testing, Admiral Tripathi confirmed the successful trial of an anti-ship missile, adding that further details on this test are currently under review. This underscores the Navy’s commitment to enhancing its operational effectiveness and technological capabilities in the face of evolving maritime challenges.
