Rheinmetall Acquires Loc Performance Products for $950 Million to Strengthen US Defense Presence

Rheinmetall is significantly expanding its presence in the United States through the acquisition of Michigan-based vehicle manufacturer Loc Performance Products, LLC. The $950-million deal, first announced in August, is set to enhance Rheinmetall’s core operations in land vehicles within one of the largest defense markets globally. This strategic move not only aims to bolster the company’s growth in the US but also seeks to elevate its reputation on the international stage.

With the completion of this acquisition, Loc Performance Products will now be rebranded and operate under the name American Rheinmetall Vehicles. This transition marks a new chapter for both companies as they work together to leverage their strengths in the defense sector.

Loc Performance is widely recognized for its production of military track systems utilized in a variety of US military vehicles, which include the M1 Abrams tank, M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle, and the M109 Paladin self-propelled howitzer. The company also specializes in crafting essential armored components, such as armor doors, turret hatches, and underbelly armor, which offer critical blast protection to military assets.

Additionally, Loc Performance has established a reputation for innovation in the defense industry, evidenced by its announcement last year of a collaboration with Milrem Robotics for the US Army’s Robotic Combat Vehicle – Light program. This partnership exemplifies Loc’s commitment to advancing military technology, an objective that aligns closely with Rheinmetall’s mission.

As part of the acquisition, Rheinmetall will take ownership of Loc’s impressive production facility in Plymouth, which spans nearly 160,000 square meters. This facility will serve as a vital hub for the company’s operations moving forward.

Rheinmetall’s chairman of the executive board, Armin Papperger, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, warmly welcoming the approximately 1,000 employees of Loc Performance to the Rheinmetall Group. He emphasized the value of their expertise and the potential for joint successes in the future.

This acquisition not only signifies Rheinmetall’s commitment to enhancing its capabilities within the US defense market but also underscores the increasing importance of strategic partnerships in the global defense landscape.
