Vir Chakra Awardee KC Kuruvilla Honoured by BSF at Attari Check-Post

During a poignant flag-lowering ceremony at the Attari check-post, former Flying Officer KC Kuruvilla, a Vir Chakra awardee, was honored by the Border Security Force (BSF) for his distinguished service and bravery during the Indo-Pak war of 1971. The ceremony was led by HN Joshi, Commandant of BSF (Operations), and attended by various officials, who acknowledged Kuruvilla’s significant contributions to the nation.

Kuruvilla, who served in the Indian Air Force and retired as Air Commodore, was part of an 18-member delegation of retired Air Force officials visiting the joint check-post to witness the traditional retreat ceremony. His presence doused the event in historical meaning, as he shared insights from his experiences as a prisoner of war for nearly a year, after being captured on December 6, 1971.

Recollecting his memories, Kuruvilla expressed how the occasion brought back nostalgic sentiments, mirroring his own journey through the Attari-Wagah land route upon his repatriation in December 1972, following his release. At just 26 years old, he was a Flying Officer in the 222 Squadron tasked with performing a vital strike against a heavy machine gun position that was obstructing the advances of the Indian Army near Dera Baba Nanak, specifically located close to Jassar village across the Ravi river.

On his third attempt at this critical mission, Kuruvilla’s determination led him to navigate the aircraft perilously low, flying at just 300 feet above ground. He successfully destroyed the targeted machine gun, but not without consequences as his aircraft was hit by incoming fire. Following the strike, he ejected from the plane but faced immediate danger as he landed within Pakistani territory, leading to his capture by a Pakistani patrol just three hours later.

Remarkably, amid his precarious situation, a Baluchi Havildar intervened during a moment when Pakistani constables contemplated his execution. This act of courage likely saved Kuruvilla’s life, highlighting the complex and often chaotic circumstances of wartime.

Today, Kuruvilla’s story not only serves as a testament to individual valor but also emphasizes the deep-seated connections and emotional weight carried by those who have served in the armed forces. The ceremony at the Attari check-post offered a moment of reflection on the sacrifices made by service members like him, and a reminder of the enduring spirit of bravery and patriotism.
