Kuruvilla was part of a distinguished group of 18 retired Air Force officials who attended the event to witness the retreat ceremony, a testament to the enduring legacy of bravery within the Indian Armed Forces. His life and military career encapsulate the courage that defined the Indo-Pak War of 1971, during which he exhibited extraordinary valor in multiple operations.

Retiring as an Air Commodore, Kuruvilla has a remarkable history, having served in the Indian Air Force’s 222 squadron at a mere 26 years of age. He was tasked with a critical mission aimed at neutralizing a heavy machine gun deployed by the Pakistani army in the Dera Baba Nanak area. This machine gun was strategically obstructing the advancement of the Indian Army, located near Jassar village across the Ravi River.

In his arduous third attempt to strike the target, Kuruvilla bravely maneuvered his aircraft at a dangerously low altitude of just 300 feet, successfully destroying the machine gun. However, in the course of this courageous act, his aircraft came under heavy ground fire, forcing him to eject and unfortunately land in Pakistani territory. Within just three hours, he was captured by a Pakistani patrol, facing imminent danger as the constables contemplated his execution. In a twist of fate, a Baluchi Havildar intervened, saving Kuruvilla’s life during his harrowing capture.

Reflecting on his journey, Kuruvilla expressed deep emotions, describing the ceremony as a nostalgic moment. He recalled the day he was repatriated through the Attari-Wagah land route after enduring a year of captivity as a prisoner of war. His experiences have become a powerful narrative of resilience and determination, symbolizing the sacrifices made by servicemen for the nation’s security and integrity.

This tribute not only honors Kuruvilla’s bravery but also serves to remind the public of the sacrifices made by countless military personnel in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty. The heartfelt recognition during this ceremony marks an important occasion for veterans and the current forces alike, reinforcing the spirit of unity and remembrance in the face of history’s challenges.
