The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Dharmender Kumar Verma, an Assistant Accounts Officer (AAO) posted in the Public Accounts Office of the Border Security Force (BSF), for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe from a contractor to clear pending bills.
According to officials, Verma had demanded ₹2 lakh from the contractor, amounting to approximately 15–20% of the total bill value, as an illicit payment for processing and clearing the outstanding payments. Following negotiations, the accused and some unidentified associates agreed to accept the bribe.
The CBI laid a trap and apprehended Verma red-handed on July 18 while he was accepting ₹40,000 as the first installment of the bribe. “The accused was caught while taking ₹40,000 from the complainant. Further investigation to identify the involvement of other individuals is ongoing,” a CBI spokesperson confirmed.
This arrest adds to a growing list of recent actions by central agencies to clamp down on corruption within government departments and security forces. The CBI is continuing its probe to uncover any wider nexus and to determine if other officials were complicit in the bribery scheme.
