CDS Felicitates Colonel RS Jamwal for Receiving MacGregor Memorial Medal 2024

Colonel RS Jamwal, Director of the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports, was felicitated by Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan for the prestigious MacGregor Memorial Medal for 2024 in a ceremony held in the capital today. The award recognises Colonel Jamwal’s exceptional leadership and operational reconnaissance in extreme environments, marking a proud moment for the Indian Army.

Instituted in 1888 by the United Service Institution of India (USI), the MacGregor Memorial Medal honours the legacy of Major General Sir Charles Metcalfe MacGregor, a pioneer in military exploration. It is one of the country’s most distinguished military recognitions in the fields of adventure, military reconnaissance, and exploration. Over 137 years, only 127 medals have been awarded, with 103 presented prior to India’s independence.

Past recipients include legendary figures like Captain F.E. Younghusband in 1890 and Colonel Narinder Kumar for his groundbreaking reconnaissance of the Siachen Glacier from 1978 to 1981. Colonel Jamwal now joins this elite group for his contributions to the Indian Army’s mountaineering capabilities and adventure sports training initiatives.

The ceremony, held in an official venue adorned with national and military symbols, also served to highlight the vital role of the United Service Institution of India in fostering research, training, and professional military education. As the institution continues its mission, calls have emerged for reassessing its funding model to maintain its relevance in a changing strategic environment.

Colonel Jamwal received the medal along with a certificate and commemorative plaque. His recognition is expected to inspire a new generation of soldiers and adventurers, reaffirming the values of courage, endurance, and innovation in service to the nation.
