General Anil Chauhan Visits Southern Command HQ in Pune

CDS underscores jointness, tech-driven warfare, and asymmetric threat response during high-level visit.

Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan visited the Headquarters of the Southern Command in Pune today, where he held high-level operational discussions with Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief. The visit highlighted India’s shifting military priorities amid an increasingly complex and volatile security environment.

Lt Gen Seth briefed General Chauhan on the prevailing security landscape, operational preparedness, and logistical and administrative matters. Commending the professionalism of the troops, the CDS specifically praised the successful execution of Operation Sindoor, an inter-services exercise that demonstrated exceptional synergy among the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The operation was cited as a model for future joint warfare.

Addressing senior officers, General Chauhan underlined the critical importance of technology in modern military operations. He stressed the need for greater investment in cyber, surveillance, and intelligence capabilities to tackle emerging asymmetric threats such as drone incursions and cyber warfare. His observations reflected global patterns, with the Journal of Strategic Studies noting a 30 percent rise in asymmetric warfare incidents since 2020.

A major highlight of the visit was a live demonstration of cutting-edge drone technology, underscoring India’s push to modernize its armed forces. According to a NATO report, nations that have integrated AI and surveillance systems into their defense protocols have reduced response times to hybrid threats by up to 40 percent.

The Southern Command, the oldest and largest command of the Indian Army, spans nearly 40 percent of India’s landmass and includes 11 states and three union territories. The visit concluded with a ceremonial exchange of mementos and a review of ongoing modernization initiatives, reinforcing the commitment to transformative reforms during the Year of Defence Reforms.

Military analysts suggest that integrated operations improve mission success rates by as much as 25 percent in multi-domain warfare. General Chauhan’s visit is seen as a significant step toward shaping a more cohesive, technology-driven, and future-ready Indian military.
