Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is preparing for the first live firing test of the Astra Mk1 Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVRAAM) from the Tejas Mk1A platform, scheduled for early August 2025. HAL Chairman and Managing Director DK Sunil confirmed the upcoming test, marking a significant milestone in India’s efforts to enhance indigenous air combat capabilities.

The Astra Mk1 missile, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), has already been successfully tested on earlier Tejas Mk1 variants using the ELTA ELM-2032 Multi-Mode Fire Control Radar. The Tejas Mk1A, however, introduces substantial upgrades, including the ELM-2052 Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar and a new Digital Flight Control Computer (DFCC), both of which require fresh integration trials with existing weapons systems.

The ELM-2052 AESA radar, developed by ELTA Systems Ltd., offers significant improvements in detection range, multi-target tracking, and resistance to electronic countermeasures. These capabilities are expected to significantly boost the Tejas Mk1A’s effectiveness in modern aerial combat.

The upcoming test will assess how well the Astra Mk1 performs under the new radar and avionics environment, and will provide critical data needed for certification and deployment. DK Sunil emphasized that this is one of the final tests before the Indian Air Force (IAF) can begin full operational deployment of the Tejas Mk1A.

The Astra Mk1, with a range exceeding 100 kilometers and advanced guidance systems, is designed to engage aerial threats with precision, even in electronically contested environments. Successful integration with the Tejas Mk1A will greatly enhance the fighter’s air superiority role, especially for deployments at forward airbases.

Despite past delays in engine deliveries and radar integration, HAL remains on track to deliver 12 Tejas Mk1A aircraft in 2025. The first aircraft is expected to roll out from HAL’s Nashik production line by the end of July.
