In a notable display of growing military cooperation, a high-level Sri Lankan Army delegation led by Brigadier R T Lokuthotahewa, Commandant of the Army School of Logistics, visited the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Khadakwasla earlier this week. The visit marks a strategic effort to enhance bilateral defence ties, foster institutional linkages, and promote interoperability between the armed forces of India and Sri Lanka.
During the visit, the delegation was briefed on the NDA’s joint training model that integrates Army, Navy, and Air Force cadets within a unified academic and military framework. Spread over 7,015 acres, the NDA has trained generations of Indian and foreign military leaders since its inception in 1954. Ceremonial engagements, including the exchange of mementos, were held alongside in-depth discussions on training curricula, leadership development, and institutional best practices.
The visit reflects a broader push under India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ and ‘Security and Growth for All in the Region’ (SAGAR) initiatives, which prioritize regional maritime and strategic cooperation. It also builds on existing frameworks such as the ‘Mitra Shakti’ joint exercises and defence training exchanges. A recent study by the Indian Council of World Affairs emphasized the importance of such engagements in reinforcing trust and operational synergy in the Indian Ocean Region.
The delegation’s visit to the NDA is expected to open avenues for joint research, officer exchange programs, and combined leadership courses, thereby strengthening shared military ethos and operational compatibility. As both countries confront evolving regional challenges and increasing geopolitical competition in the Indian Ocean, such interactions reinforce their roles as key security stakeholders and dependable strategic partners.
