Indian Army and Argentine Army Launch Historic Joint Military Expedition to Mt Kun

Marking a milestone in bilateral military cooperation, India and Argentina have jointly launched a high-altitude expedition to Mt. Kun, a 7,077-meter peak in the Indian Himalayas. The expedition was ceremonially flagged off today by Lieutenant General Ajay Ramdev, Director General of Integrated Training (DG IT) of the Indian Army, at an event attended by senior military leaders from both nations.

Comprising eight soldiers each from the Indian and Argentine armies, the team is led by Lieutenant Colonel Jay Prakash Kumar of the Indian Army. The expedition builds on the success of their joint ascent of Mt. Aconcagua (6,995 meters) in Argentina earlier this year and is expected to culminate in a summit attempt in August 2025.

Mt. Kun is known for its technical difficulty, posing serious challenges to climbers with its crevasses, steep ice walls, and rapidly changing weather. The team will set up progressive camps at 5,300 meters, 6,000 meters, and 6,200 meters before making the final push. According to historical records, only two successful ascents were recorded before 1971, underscoring the mountainโ€™s formidable nature.

The joint expedition aims to promote mutual military learning, enhance professional skills in high-altitude warfare, and strengthen camaraderie. Indian troops bring deep experience in the Himalayas, while their Argentine counterparts contribute knowledge of climbing in the Andes, making this collaboration both symbolic and practical.

Defense analysts view this initiative as part of Indiaโ€™s broader diplomatic strategy to deepen ties in Latin America. As China increases its presence in the region through military and economic engagement, India is positioning itself as a reliable and strategic partner. The two countries, which celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations in February 2024, have recently expanded their defense cooperation, including a 2023 commercial pact between Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and the Argentine Air Force for helicopter spares and engine maintenance.

The Mt. Kun expedition is expected to boost interoperability and pave the way for future joint training missions, further anchoring Indiaโ€“Argentina defense relations in shared values and operational synergy.
