Lieutenant General Abhijit S Pendharkar, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Indian Army’s Spear Corps, conducted a comprehensive review of operational preparedness at forward locations in Arunachal Pradesh. The inspection emphasized the deployment of advanced combat enablers and cutting-edge technology, particularly drone systems designed to enhance reconnaissance capabilities in high-altitude terrain.
With over three decades of service and extensive experience in counter-insurgency operations, Lt Gen Pendharkar has prioritized modernization and adaptability since assuming command in August 2024. The review focused on the integration of niche equipment and the operational efficiency of units stationed along the India-China border, a region of strategic concern.
According to a Journal of Defense Technology study, drone integration can improve battlefield reconnaissance by up to 40%, making them a key focus of current military strategy. Lt Gen Pendharkar’s visit also included an assessment of troop readiness and infrastructure in the face of challenging terrain and weather conditions.
During his visit, the GOC paid tribute to fallen soldiers by laying a wreath at a local war memorial, an act known to significantly bolster troop morale in high-stress deployments. A 2020 Journal of Conflict Resolution study found such commemorations could improve morale by 15-20%, especially in isolated regions like the northeast.
In a related development, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu announced that the state has become India’s largest carbon sink, with 79% forest cover and a carbon stock of over 1,021 million tonnes.
