Lt Gen Anindya Sengupta Reviews AK 203 Rifle Production at Indo Russian Facility in Amethi

India is advancing rapidly toward defense self-reliance with the large-scale production of the AK-203 assault rifle underway at the Indo-Russian Rifles Pvt Ltd (IRRPL) facility in Korwa, Amethi. On Friday, Lt Gen Anindya Sengupta, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Central Command, visited the state-of-the-art factory to review the project’s progress.

The AK-203 rifle, a modernized version of the iconic Kalashnikov, is being locally manufactured under a 2019 Inter-Governmental Agreement between India and Russia. The weapon, nicknamed “Sher” (Lion) by Indian troops, is being inducted into frontline units deployed along the Line of Control (LoC) and the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

So far, 48,000 rifles have been delivered to the Indian Army. An additional 70,000 units are expected to be supplied over the next six months as part of a ₹5,200 crore contract to manufacture a total of 601,427 rifles. Full indigenous production is targeted for completion by December 2025—nearly two years ahead of the originally planned 2030 deadline.

This collaboration merges Russian expertise with India’s “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives. By mid-2025, the project had achieved 50% indigenization, with further localization underway. The joint venture with Kalashnikov Concern is reducing India’s dependency on arms imports, aligning with the Defence Acquisition Council’s 2020 move to restrict the import of 101 military items.

The AK-203, chambered for the 7.62×39mm cartridge, provides enhanced firepower, reliability, and adaptability for high-altitude warfare and counter-insurgency operations. The IRRPL facility is expected to reach an annual production capacity of 150,000 rifles, contributing significantly to India’s long-term goal of supplying 600,000 units by 2030.

India’s effort mirrors a global trend toward defense industrialization. Data from 2021 to 2024 indicates a shift from importing 70,000 AK-203s to establishing full-scale domestic production.

Quality control and testing at the Amethi facility ensure the rifles meet military standards. With talks underway for possible exports to friendly nations, India is also positioning itself as a future global defense supplier.

The AK-203 project marks a major step in India’s quest for defense independence, representing both the success of Indo-Russian defense collaboration and the strengthening of indigenous capabilities in a strategically sensitive region.
