Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth, PVSM, AVSM, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Indian Army’s Southern Command, visited Rashtriya Military School (RMS) in Belagavi this week, praising the institution’s infrastructure, training ethos, and its contribution to building disciplined, future-ready leaders. His visit emphasized the enduring importance of military schools in India’s defence education ecosystem.
During his inspection, Lt Gen Seth took stock of the school’s modern academic and physical training infrastructure. He lauded the efforts of the faculty and administrative staff for creating an environment that fosters holistic development among cadets, preparing them for both military and civilian leadership roles. The visit reaffirmed the Southern Command’s dedication to strengthening foundational institutions that contribute to the Army’s long-term human resource pipeline.

Founded in the early 20th century as King George’s Royal Indian Military School and renamed Rashtriya Military School in 2007, the Belagavi institution has trained generations of leaders rooted in discipline, integrity, and service. In 1952, it opened its doors to civilian students, and more recently, the inclusion of girl cadets marked a progressive leap toward inclusive military education. Lt Gen Seth’s interaction with girl cadets was a highlight of the visit, during which he commended their determination and resilience, reflecting the Army’s evolving ethos of gender diversity and equal opportunity.

The General Officer also felicitated outstanding cadets for their academic and extracurricular achievements, reinforcing the value of all-round excellence. This recognition aligns with the school’s motto, “Sheelem Param Bhushanam” (Character is the Highest Virtue), a principle it has upheld since 1966.

Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth assumed command of the Indian Army’s Southern Command on July 1, 2024, following a distinguished tenure as Army Commander of the South Western Command. His visit to RMS Belagavi, one of the five premier Rashtriya Military Schools in India, reflects the Army’s ongoing commitment to nurturing leadership from the grassroots, ensuring that the legacy of courage, service, and integrity continues into the future.
