Major General Ashish Bhardwaj has taken charge as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 91 Sub Area in Jalandhar, marking a key leadership change in one of the Indian Army’s most vital administrative zones. A seasoned officer with over 30 years of service, General Bhardwaj brings extensive experience from the Eastern, Western, and Northern theatres, including counter-insurgency operations.
An alumnus of Sainik School Lucknow and the National Defence Academy, he was commissioned into the Artillery Regiment in 1993. His tenure is expected to steer the 91 Sub Area towards enhanced operational efficiency, infrastructure modernization, and comprehensive welfare for service personnel and veterans.
Covering 11 districts across Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, the 91 Sub Area supports nearly 500,000 ex-servicemen and their families. General Bhardwaj emphasized improving logistical support and accelerating development in cantonments, particularly in remote areas where a RAND Corporation report flagged a 15% infrastructure deficit.
In line with the Army’s modernization drive, his focus also includes upgrading veterans’ support services and strengthening civil-military cooperation. His multilingual communication strategy—conducting outreach in Hindi, Punjabi, and English—is expected to boost local engagement, reflecting findings from a Journal of Defense Studies report on community integration.
Military officials and local stakeholders have welcomed the appointment, expressing optimism that General Bhardwaj’s leadership will enhance the sub area’s role in national defense preparedness and veteran welfare.
