The Army on Sunday launched a massive rescue and relief operation in cloudburst-hit Jodh Ghati village of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district, where heavy overnight rains triggered landslides and flash floods, claiming seven lives.
According to officials, several Army columns were inducted into the affected areas to rescue stranded families and shift the injured to hospitals. Dhruv helicopters of the Army airlifted 15 injured persons from Ghatti to a hospital in Pathankot, Punjab.
Troops from the Rising Star Corps are working in coordination with the police, SDRF, and locals to provide emergency assistance, including food supplies and medical care, to affected families.
Deputy Commissioner Kathua, Rajesh Sharma, who is supervising the ongoing operations, confirmed the loss of lives and said that connectivity issues are hampering relief work.
“Heavy rainfall has caused significant damage in Kathua, and unfortunately, seven lives have been lost. We are ensuring essential supplies reach people, with air support being arranged where road access is cut off,” he said.
The administration has appealed to locals to remain cautious as the region continues to witness heavy rainfall.
