Lieutenant General Devendra Sharma, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Army Training Command (ARTRAC), visited the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai today, reaffirming the Indian Army’s focus on strengthening training standards and leadership development.
During the visit, Lt. Gen. Sharma reviewed the academy’s advanced training infrastructure and modernization initiatives. Established in 1963, OTA is known for its 49-week course that prepares officers for the Short Service Commission in all branches except the Army Medical Corps. The 750-acre campus has produced decorated officers, including recipients of one Param Vir Chakra and eight Ashoka Chakra awards.
An alumnus of the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy, where he was awarded the Sword of Honour, Lt. Gen. Sharma praised OTA for its innovative training approach. He noted the integration of programs in emergency medical response, search and rescue, and hand-to-hand combat to ensure holistic officer development.
His visit comes as part of the Army’s ongoing modernization push, supported by his extensive experience in counter-insurgency operations, high-altitude commands, and his recent recognition with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal in 2025.
The engagement also aligns with India’s efforts to foster international defense cooperation, following a dialogue with Australian junior leaders on August 12 aimed at sharing best practices for addressing troop challenges. OTA’s comprehensive training model is viewed as an important contributor to such global exchanges, enhancing India’s readiness in an evolving security landscape.
