Lieutenant General Dinesh Singh Rana has been appointed as the new Chief of the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), the crucial tri-services formation tasked with managing and operationalising Indiaโs nuclear arsenal and strategic missile forces. He will assume charge on October 1, succeeding Vice Admiral Suraj Berry, who superannuated today after 38 years of distinguished service.
An infantry officer from the Garhwal Rifles, Lt Gen Rana also serves as the Colonel of the Regiment of the Garhwal Rifles. Prior to this appointment, he held the position of Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman & Nicobar Command (CINCAN), the nationโs only operational tri-services command. Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar will now take over as the new CINCAN.
The Strategic Forces Command forms the backbone of Indiaโs nuclear command and control structure. Functioning under the Nuclear Command Authority chaired by the Prime Minister, it is entrusted with the readiness, deployment, and security of the countryโs nuclear weapons and delivery systems.
Lt Gen Ranaโs appointment underscores the governmentโs focus on ensuring strong leadership in one of the most sensitive and strategically significant arms of the Indian defence establishment.
