Vice Admiral Suraj Berry, PVSM, AVSM, NM, VSM, Commander-in-Chief, superannuated today after an illustrious career spanning over 38 years in the Indian Navy. Marking the occasion with a solemn tribute, he laid a wreath at the National War Memorial in New Delhi to honour the supreme sacrifice of the nation’s Bravehearts.
Commissioned on January 1, 1987, Vice Admiral Berry is a Gunnery and Missile Warfare specialist and an alumnus of the Naval War College, Rhode Island, USA. With more than 19 years of sea experience, he commanded four frontline warships—INS Nirbhik, INS Karmuk, INS Talwar, and aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, where he served as the commissioning Commanding Officer.
In key shore appointments, he spearheaded transformative initiatives, including the rollout of the Agnipath scheme and the historic induction of women sailors, shaping the future of human resource development in the Navy.
As he lowers the Naval Ensign, Vice Admiral Berry reaffirmed his lifelong commitment to the nation, championing India’s maritime heritage as a cornerstone of the vision for Viksit Bharat 2047.
The Indian Navy expressed its deepest gratitude for his exemplary service, wishing him “Fair Winds and Following Seas” as he embarks on his next voyage.
