In a significant moment of mentorship and exchange of ideas, Lt Gen Nagendra Singh, AVSM, YSM, SM, Commandant of the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, interacted with officers from the prestigious National Defence College (NDC) during their visit to his alma mater. The session was marked by insightful discussions on evolving strategic challenges, leadership paradigms, and the future trajectory of India’s defence leadership.

Lt Gen Nagendra Singh, himself an alumnus of IMA, was commissioned into the Punjab Regiment in 1989. Over the course of his distinguished career, he has undertaken advanced military education at the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), Wellington, and the National Defence College, New Delhi two institutions that have shaped many of India’s finest military leaders. His career reflects a deep commitment to continuous learning and strategic foresight, values he encouraged the visiting NDC officers to embrace.

During the interaction, Lt Gen Singh highlighted the importance of evolving leadership skills to meet modern security challenges, stressing the need for intellectual agility, jointness, and strategic decision-making in an era defined by rapid technological change and complex geopolitical realities. The visit also served as a nostalgic homecoming for many officers who once trained at IMA and are now shaping India’s defence policies and doctrines at the national level.

The National Defence College, established in New Delhi, is the highest institution for strategic learning within India’s defence ecosystem. It offers a prestigious year-long course attended by a select group of one-star officers from the armed forces, senior civil servants at the rank of Joint Secretary, and around 25 officers from friendly foreign nations including the US, UK, France, Germany, Australia, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and UAE. NDC plays a pivotal role as a think tank for the Government of India, contributing to policy formulation and strategic vision on national and international security matters.
