The Headquarters Eastern Naval Command (HQENC) hosted the annual Meteorology and Oceanography Officers’ Conference (METOC) on 6 November 2025, reaffirming the Indian Navy’s focus on integrating scientific precision with maritime operations.
Opening Address Highlights Role of METOC in Naval Operations
The conference was inaugurated by Rear Admiral Manoj Jha, VSM, Chief Staff Officer (Operations), Eastern Naval Command, who delivered the opening address. In his remarks, the Admiral underscored the ubiquitous and ever-growing importance of Meteorology and Oceanography in modern naval operations, ranging from mission planning and navigation to anti-submarine warfare, disaster response, and humanitarian assistance.
He highlighted the vital role played by meteorological insights and oceanographic data in ensuring operational safety, mission success, and strategic foresight across the Indian Navy’s fleet activities.
Recognising Excellence: INS Shikra Wins Maiden METOC Trophy
A major highlight of the event was the institution of the ‘Best Indian Navy Met Office Trophy’, aimed at recognising excellence in operational forecasting, service delivery, and overall efficiency among the Navy’s meteorological establishments.
INS Shikra earned the maiden award for Academic Year 2024–25, for its outstanding performance in accurate weather prediction, effective support to naval operations, and innovation in data-driven forecasting.
Strengthening Scientific Support to Maritime Operations
The conference provided a platform for professional dialogue and knowledge sharing among METOC officers from across the Navy. Discussions covered advancements in meteorological technology, data analytics, and oceanographic modelling — key to enhancing situational awareness and operational effectiveness in the Indian Ocean Region.
The event reaffirmed the Indian Navy’s commitment to leveraging science, technology, and data-driven analysis to strengthen its maritime capabilities and uphold its role as a responsible regional maritime power.
