A solemn wreath-laying ceremony was held at the War Memorial of the Bengal Engineer Group & Centre (BEG&C), Roorkee, to mark the 223rd Group Day celebrations, honouring the courage, sacrifice, and legacy of the Bengal Sappers, one of the Indian Army’s oldest and most decorated engineer groups.
Lieutenant General Anindya Sengupta, GOC-in-C, Central Command, laid a wreath at the memorial to pay heartfelt tributes to the fallen heroes who made the supreme sacrifice in service of the nation. The ceremony echoed with reverence and pride as officers, soldiers, and veterans came together to honour the indomitable spirit that has defined the Bengal Sappers for over two centuries.

Following the wreath-laying, the Army Commander reviewed an impressive Guard of Honour and interacted with serving personnel and veterans, appreciating their enduring dedication and professionalism. Among those present was a 91-year-old veteran, whose participation added deep emotional significance to the event, symbolising the unbroken bond between generations of Sappers.

The 223rd Group Day celebrations served as both a remembrance and a reunion, reflecting the Bengal Sappers’ enduring ethos of service, camaraderie, and technical excellence. Veterans and serving members shared stories of valour and engineering feats, reinforcing the proud traditions that continue to inspire new generations of soldiers.

Lieutenant General Sengupta, in his address, praised the Bengal Engineer Group’s historic contributions to the nation’s defence infrastructure, disaster relief, and combat engineering. He reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to upholding the legacy of honour, professionalism, and selfless service that the Sappers embody.
