A young Army soldier lost his life during a routine training exercise in Rajasthanโs Sriganganagar district after an armoured tank sank in the Indira Gandhi Canal, officials said on Wednesday.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning when armoured vehicles were conducting a canal-crossing drill. According to police, the tank became stuck in the middle of the canal and began sinking rapidly.
โThere were two soldiers in the tank. One managed to escape, while the other was trapped inside,โ a police officer said. Rescue efforts continued for several hours before the trapped soldierโs body was retrieved by teams from the police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and Civil Defence.
Authorities said a post-mortem will be conducted on Wednesday.
The Army has not yet released the identity of the soldier. An inquiry into the circumstances leading to the accident is expected.
