Captain Harshita Raghav to Lead Historic Animal Contingent in Republic Day Parade 2026

Captain Harshita Raghav, an officer in the Indian Army’s Remount Veterinary Corps (RVC), will command a specially curated animal contingent during the 77th Republic Day Parade on January 26, 2026. This marks a significant milestone, as it is the first time the Indian Army’s animal contingent will participate in the parade along Kartavya Path.

Captain Raghav, among the first batch of women officers commissioned into the RVC, serves as the contingent commander. She is a second-generation military officer and a graduate of Mumbai Veterinary College (Bombay Veterinary College), where she earned her BVSc & AH degree, followed by an MVSc in Wildlife Science. Her selection represents a pioneering achievement for women in this specialized corps, which focuses on the training, care, and deployment of animals in military operations.

The contingent highlights the critical role animals play in challenging terrains and modern military applications. It includes two Bactrian camels, four Zanskar ponies, four raptors (trained for anti-drone roles), ten Indian-breed Army dogs (featuring five indigenous varieties), and six conventional military dogs. This diverse lineup underscores the RVC’s expertise in animal training, incorporating neuroscience-based methods to enhance operational readiness.

In recent statements ahead of the parade, Captain Raghav emphasized the uniqueness of the contingent, noting its visual appeal and the specialized preparation involved. She described the RVC as currently the “centre of attraction” due to this innovative display, which showcases both traditional and contemporary uses of animals in defence.

Her alma mater, Mumbai Veterinary College, along with various defence training institutions and alumni networks, has expressed pride in her accomplishments. Captain Raghav’s journey also includes prior contributions to veterinary science, including discussions on animal health during the COVID-19 period.

This participation reflects the Indian Army’s commitment to inclusivity, innovation, and recognition of specialized units. The Republic Day Parade preparations, including rehearsals, continue to highlight India’s military heritage, cultural diversity, and evolving capabilities.
