Chirag Veer Singh Sarao

Chirag Veer Singh Sarao has created history by becoming the first Keshdhari Sikh American to join the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) with permission to maintain his unshorn hair and beard in accordance with his Sikh faith. His admission marks a significant milestone for religious inclusion and diversity within the United States military and represents a major breakthrough for Sikh Americans aspiring to serve in uniform without compromising their religious identity.

By securing formal religious accommodation from the US Air Force, Sarao has demonstrated that military excellence and religious observance can successfully coexist within one of America’s most prestigious military institutions. His achievement has been widely welcomed as an important step towards expanding opportunities for visibly religious minorities within the US armed forces.

Sarao was appointed to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs on April 4, 2026. On June 20, he received official religious accommodation authorising him to retain his Sikh articles of faith, including his unshorn hair and beard, which form an integral part of Sikh religious practice. Four days later, on June 24, he reported to the Academy on In-Processing Day (I-Day) and commenced the institution’s rigorous six-week Basic Cadet Training programme.

A Keshdhari Sikh observes the Sikh principle of kesh, which mandates maintaining unshorn hair as an expression of faith and spiritual discipline. For observant Sikhs, the beard and uncut hair are sacred articles of faith that symbolise commitment to Sikh values and religious identity. The accommodation granted to Sarao ensures that he can pursue his military ambitions while remaining true to his beliefs.

His historic achievement has been hailed by the American Sikh Council as an important milestone reflecting years of advocacy for greater religious inclusion and equal opportunities within the United States military. The development also highlights the evolving policies of the US armed forces regarding religious accommodations that enable service members to faithfully observe their beliefs while fulfilling their professional responsibilities.

Sarao’s admission to the Academy is the culmination of years of academic excellence, leadership development, athletic achievement and community service. Even before receiving his appointment to the Air Force Academy, he had distinguished himself as an outstanding student and leader across multiple disciplines.

His exceptional academic credentials earned him full scholarships from both the Air Force Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) and the Naval Reserve Officers’ Training Corps programmes. In addition to these prestigious offers, Sarao secured admission to leading American institutions, including the University of Southern California and the University of Washington, demonstrating his remarkable scholastic accomplishments.

Beyond academics, Sarao has built an impressive record of achievements that reflect the qualities expected of future military leaders. He is an Eagle Scout, one of the highest distinctions in American scouting, and holds a second-degree black belt in Taekwondo. His commitment to physical excellence is further reflected in his participation as a member of his school’s varsity water polo team.

An enthusiastic outdoorsman, Sarao has actively participated in numerous physically demanding activities, including cycling, skiing, hiking, backpacking and fly-fishing. These pursuits have helped develop the resilience, endurance and adaptability that remain central attributes of military leadership and operational effectiveness.

Leadership has consistently defined his journey. During his senior scouting years, Sarao served as President of his Venture Crew for two years, where he led teams during challenging outdoor expeditions involving hiking, rafting and snowshoeing. His ability to guide and inspire others in demanding environments earned him recognition for exemplary leadership qualities that align closely with the values cultivated at military service academies.

Located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the United States Air Force Academy is one of the five federal service academies of the United States. The institution combines world-class undergraduate education with intensive military and leadership training, preparing cadets for commissions as Second Lieutenants in either the United States Air Force or the United States Space Force upon graduation.

Admission to the Academy is highly competitive, with candidates undergoing rigorous academic, physical and leadership evaluations before receiving appointments. The institution has long been recognised for producing military leaders who serve across diverse operational domains, including air, space and cyber warfare.

For Chirag Veer Singh Sarao, joining the Air Force Academy represents both a personal accomplishment and a historic moment for Sikh representation in military institutions. His journey symbolises the growing recognition that professional excellence and religious identity need not exist in opposition. Instead, they can complement one another in institutions committed to merit, diversity and inclusion.

His achievement carries particular significance for young Sikh Americans who aspire to military service while remaining committed to their faith. By becoming the first Keshdhari Sikh American admitted to the United States Air Force Academy with religious accommodation, Sarao has not only realised his own ambitions but has also helped expand opportunities for future generations of aspiring military leaders.

As he embarks upon his journey as a cadet at one of America’s premier military institutions, Chirag Veer Singh Sarao’s story stands as a powerful testament to perseverance, leadership and the enduring possibility of serving both one’s nation and one’s faith with equal dedication.
