At an age when most students are beginning to explore their career aspirations, 17-year-old Riddhi Chauhan is already leading nearly 300 cadets while preparing for a future as a commissioned officer in the United States Navy. The Indian-American student from Benjamin N. Cardozo High School in Queens, New York, currently serves as the Battalion Commanding Officer of her school’s Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) unit—the highest student leadership position within the programme.
Adding another milestone to her remarkable journey, Riddhi has secured admission to the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS), taking an important step towards her goal of joining the prestigious United States Naval Academy and serving as a commissioned officer in the US Navy.
Her rise through the ranks of the NJROTC programme has been defined by years of dedication, leadership and academic excellence. What began as an effort to build self-confidence and strengthen her leadership abilities during her freshman year of high school gradually evolved into a clear sense of purpose and commitment to military service.
Today, Riddhi oversees the daily functioning of one of the country’s prominent NJROTC battalions, supervising training activities, mentoring junior cadets and ensuring the smooth operation of nearly 300 students under her command. Her leadership responsibilities extend well beyond ceremonial duties, requiring meticulous planning, effective communication and the ability to inspire those around her through personal example.

Four days every week, Riddhi arrives at school before 7 a.m. to conduct drill practice before academic classes begin. The demanding schedule reflects the discipline and commitment required of military leadership programmes that are specifically designed to prepare future officers and leaders.
Sponsored by the United States Navy, the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps programme focuses on developing leadership, discipline, teamwork, citizenship and character among high school students across the United States. For Riddhi, the programme has become the foundation of her long-term commitment to military service and leadership.
Her appointment as Battalion Commanding Officer represents the culmination of years of consistent effort and progressive leadership development. Prior to assuming the highest student leadership position in her battalion, she served in several important appointments, including Academic Commander, STEM Commander, Platoon Leader and Inspection Commander.
As Academic Commander, she played a key role in leading her school’s team to the second round of the Leadership and Academic Bowl for two consecutive years. She also contributed significantly towards helping her battalion secure first place in a national academic examination, demonstrating both academic excellence and effective team leadership.
Her contributions extended into the field of science and technology during her tenure as STEM Commander. Under her leadership, the battalion successfully constructed its first SeaPerch underwater robot, providing cadets with valuable hands-on experience in engineering, robotics and problem-solving. The project highlighted her ability to integrate technical innovation with collaborative leadership while fostering a culture of learning among her peers.
Mentorship has remained central to Riddhi’s leadership philosophy throughout her journey. Over the years, she has guided and mentored more than 200 cadets, helping younger students develop confidence, discipline and leadership skills essential for both military and civilian careers. Her approach to leadership emphasises service, personal growth and empowering others to achieve their potential.
For Riddhi, leadership is not defined by authority or rank but by service and responsibility towards others. She credits both the NJROTC programme and her upbringing for shaping this perspective. The teachings of Mahant Swami Maharaj, the spiritual leader of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, along with her active participation in the organisation’s youth programmes, have instilled in her values of humility, compassion and selfless service from an early age.
These principles have guided her through demanding leadership responsibilities and challenging training experiences, including Sail Training in Newport, Rhode Island. Reflecting on her experiences, she acknowledges that the programme taught her the importance of remaining calm under pressure, maintaining consistency and stepping outside her comfort zone whenever circumstances demand adaptability and resilience.
Riddhi’s admission to the Naval Academy Preparatory School marks another significant milestone in her military aspirations. The institution prepares selected candidates academically, physically and militarily for eventual admission to the United States Naval Academy, one of America’s premier military institutions responsible for training future officers of the United States Navy and Marine Corps.
Her accomplishment reflects not only academic excellence but also the leadership qualities, discipline and character expected of future military officers. Admission to the preparatory programme is highly competitive and recognises candidates who have demonstrated exceptional potential for service and leadership.
Riddhi is the daughter of Ruchika and Dilip Chauhan, whose family traces its roots to Jaipur, Rajasthan, before settling in New York. Her sister, Kahini Gupta Chauhan, is pursuing a career in medicine, reflecting the family’s strong commitment to education and professional excellence.
At just 17 years of age, Riddhi Chauhan has already established herself as an accomplished student leader who has commanded hundreds of cadets, mentored future leaders and secured a place on one of the most prestigious pathways into military service in the United States. Yet, for her, these achievements represent not the culmination of her journey but the beginning of an even greater mission.
Her story stands as an inspiring example of leadership through service, demonstrating how dedication, discipline and a commitment to helping others can pave the way towards extraordinary accomplishments. As she prepares for the next chapter of her military journey, Riddhi Chauhan continues to embody the values of excellence, humility and purposeful leadership that define the finest traditions of military service.
