A tragic road accident near Jaisalmer Military Station has claimed the life of Major Hamza Arif, a 30-year-old Indian Army officer from Indore, leaving his family, colleagues and newly married wife in profound grief.
Major Hamza Arif died after the Tata Safari SUV he was driving collided with a camel and overturned multiple times near the Jaisalmer Military Station late on Thursday night. Two other Army officers travelling in the vehicle, Lieutenant Ayushman Gusain and Lieutenant Abhinav Rathore, were injured in the accident and admitted to the Military Hospital for treatment.
The tragedy has drawn particular attention because Major Hamza had married his longtime partner only about a month before his death. Their marriage followed a relationship that had lasted nearly seven years, during which the couple reportedly worked to secure the acceptance of their respective families.
According to people close to the family, Major Hamza and his wife had entered their married life with hope and optimism after overcoming several challenges. His wife, an engineer belonging to a Hindu family, had reportedly married him through a court marriage after both families agreed to their union.
The families had been preparing to celebrate the marriage with a grand reception in Indore in December. Major Hamza and his wife were expected to return home for the function, where relatives and friends were preparing to welcome the newlyweds.
Instead, the young officer’s mortal remains were brought home wrapped in the National Flag, turning preparations for a celebration into scenes of mourning.
Major Hamza had also recently purchased the Tata Safari involved in the accident. At the time of the crash, he was serving at Jaisalmer Military Station and was driving the vehicle himself.
The accident reportedly occurred shortly after midnight on the road near the Jaisalmer War Museum, a few kilometres from Jaisalmer city. Major Hamza and the two lieutenant-rank officers were returning to the military station from the city when a camel suddenly appeared on the road.
The SUV struck the animal, went out of control and overturned several times. The severely damaged vehicle reportedly skidded for a considerable distance before coming to a halt near the boundary wall of the Army area. The camel also died at the scene.
Army personnel and police officials rushed to the location after receiving information about the accident. The three officers were rescued from the damaged vehicle and taken to the Military Hospital at Jaisalmer Military Station.
Despite efforts to save him, Major Hamza succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Lieutenant Abhinav Rathore and Lieutenant Ayushman Gusain survived the crash and continued to receive medical care for their injuries.
Police officials said the preliminary investigation indicated that the SUV lost control after the camel suddenly came onto the road. The impact caused the vehicle to roll over multiple times. Major Hamza’s body was subsequently taken for a post-mortem examination before arrangements were made to transport his mortal remains to Indore.
Major Hamza Arif belonged to Dhanvantri Nagar in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. He was the only son of a middle-class Bohra Muslim family and is survived by his parents and three sisters.
His death has left the family devastated. For his parents and sisters, the loss has been made even more painful by the fact that he had only recently begun a new chapter of his personal life.
Major Hamza completed his Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Chameli Devi College in 2016. Although academically trained as an engineer, he was determined to serve the country in uniform.
He successfully cleared the selection process and joined the Indian Army in 2017. Over the following years, he progressed through the ranks and rose to the rank of Major. Friends described his advancement in the Army as the result of his commitment, discipline and dedication to military service.
His childhood friends remembered him as a humble, compassionate and determined individual. They said he remained deeply connected with the people who had known him before his military career and was respected both as an Army officer and as a human being.
Major Hamza’s love story had also become an important part of his life. He and his partner reportedly remained committed to each other for seven years, despite the social and familial challenges associated with their interfaith relationship.
After years of waiting, the couple finally married and began planning their future together. Their wedding photographs, which showed the couple celebrating the beginning of their married life, were widely shared following the officer’s death.
The photographs presented a painful contrast between the happiness of their wedding and the tragedy that followed only weeks later. His wife had reportedly been looking forward to supporting him throughout his Army career and building a life with him.
She accompanied his mortal remains to Indore for his final journey, facing the devastating loss of her husband just one month after their marriage.
Major Hamza’s mortal remains were scheduled to be brought to Indore, where his final rites were to be conducted with military honours while respecting the religious customs of the Bohra Muslim community.
The accident has cast a pall of gloom over Jaisalmer Military Station. Fellow officers, soldiers, relatives and friends mourned the loss of a young officer whose professional career and married life had both appeared to hold immense promise.
For his Army colleagues, Major Hamza Arif will be remembered as a dedicated officer who served the country with commitment. For his family, he was a beloved son and brother. For his wife, he was a partner with whom she had waited seven years to begin a life that was tragically cut short within weeks.
His final return to Indore, draped in the Tricolour, marked a heartbreaking end to the journey of a young soldier whose life represented professional dedication, personal perseverance and a love that had survived years of challenges but was ultimately separated by an unforeseen tragedy.
