The interaction brought together senior representatives of the Indian Army and Punjab Police to examine the evolving nature of narco-drone activities, technology-enabled surveillance and the need for coordinated responses to emerging border security challenges.

PK Sinha, Special Director General of Police (Law and Order), Punjab, along with the Additional Director General of Police of the Anti-Narcotics Task Force, Punjab, participated in the discussions and shared perspectives on the changing nature of drone-assisted narcotics trafficking.

The officials discussed measures aimed at strengthening coordinated response mechanisms, improving the integration of technology and enhancing operational synergy among agencies responsible for maintaining security in border areas.

Lieutenant General Pushpendra Singh, AVSM, SM**, Army Commander, Western Command, highlighted the importance of close inter-agency coordination in dealing with emerging security challenges. He emphasised technology-enabled surveillance and concerted action as important components of an effective response to threats involving drones along the border.

The increasing availability of commercially accessible unmanned aerial systems has introduced new challenges for security agencies operating along sensitive border regions. Small drones can potentially be used to transport narcotics and other prohibited material while reducing the direct exposure of individuals involved in cross-border smuggling networks.

Punjab’s international border has consequently witnessed growing attention from security agencies over the use of drones for cross-border smuggling. Their relatively small size, ability to operate at night and capacity to fly at low altitudes can make detection and interception challenging, particularly when attempts are made across a geographically extensive border.

Countering such activities requires cooperation among multiple organisations. The Indian Army, Border Security Force, Punjab Police, intelligence agencies and specialised anti-narcotics units can possess different operational capabilities and information that, when effectively coordinated, contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of suspicious activity.

Rapid sharing of information is particularly important in cases involving drones. Detection of an unmanned aerial vehicle may need to be followed by tracking, interception, identification of possible drop locations and subsequent ground searches. Law-enforcement agencies may then investigate individuals or networks associated with the recovered material.

Technology is therefore becoming an increasingly important element of border security. Surveillance systems, counter-drone technologies, sensors and other monitoring capabilities can assist security forces in identifying and responding to unauthorised aerial activity.

At the same time, technology alone cannot address the challenge. Effective coordination between agencies responsible for border security, policing, intelligence gathering and narcotics enforcement remains essential for converting individual detections into broader action against trafficking networks.

The involvement of Punjab Police’s Anti-Narcotics Task Force in the interaction is significant because countering narcotics trafficking requires action extending beyond the immediate border area. Investigations into recovered consignments can help agencies identify local facilitators, distribution networks, financial links and other elements of the trafficking chain.

The interaction at Headquarters Western Command reflects the growing emphasis on developing an integrated response to security threats created by rapidly evolving drone technology.

Western Command has an important operational responsibility along India’s western sector, while Punjab Police and specialised state agencies maintain extensive law-enforcement and intelligence networks within the state. Greater coordination between these organisations can therefore help connect border surveillance with ground-level policing and investigation.

The discussions also highlight how inexpensive unmanned systems are changing the nature of border management. Technologies originally developed for civilian applications can potentially be exploited for illegal activities, requiring security agencies to continuously adapt their surveillance, detection and response mechanisms.

Regular interaction among military, police and specialised security agencies can help establish common operating procedures, improve information sharing and reduce response times when suspicious drone activity is detected.

The Western Command interaction therefore represents another step towards strengthening institutional cooperation against drone-enabled narcotics trafficking. By combining inter-agency coordination, technology-enabled surveillance, intelligence sharing and coordinated operational action, security agencies aim to develop a more effective response to emerging threats along India’s western border.
